Bread for the World

Gethsemane has a long history of caring for the physical needs of our neighbors. Hunger is one of the pillars our social ministry team focuses on throughout the year. We are wonderful at making financial donations to ICA and we regularly fill our Need of The Month barrels in order to serve those closest to us. We host our 4th Saturday Café, serve at People Serving People, offer a healthy, no-cost meal through our after-school program and invite community members to our Wednesday evening meals.

For many years a small group of Gethsemane members have also been active supporters of Bread for the World in order to expand our impact on hunger-related issues. Bread for the World is a non-partisan, faith-based organization that calls on individuals to reach out to their legislators to make systemic changes so that together we can end hunger here and abroad. They believe that Christians have a moral responsibility to act on their faith on behalf of their neighbors. This organization combines prayer and action to impact individual lives. It is easy to make a difference:

During these days of staying in place why not take a few minutes to reach out to your legislators and call on them to work toward eliminating hunger locally and globally? Click here for a sample letter that can be emailed directly to your legislator can be found here:

As unemployment rises due to Covid-19 perhaps you are more motivated at this time to request emergency assistance for children and families that are newly impacted. Click here for a sample letter advocating for SNAP and other food programs can be found here:

The links above provide easy email access to our elected officials and Bread for the World assures us that email responses make a big impact. These take just a few minutes to send and you can pass the link on to family and friends that care about people like you do. If you prefer to send a handwritten letter the contact information for your legislators is listed below.

Let us pray:

God, as we sit in these idle times stir in us a desire to respond to those who struggle for food stability. Use our hands and our time to make a difference for people in need. Surround all of your children this day with love and compassion so that we might see the needs of those around us and reach out in a variety of ways. Amen.
