Join us as Pastor Laurie Eaton leads us in an exploration of The Story of Ruth; Twelve Moments in Every Woman’s Life, by Joan Chittister. We will reflect on our own lives, and those of other women, through the ancient story of Ruth and Naomi. Though written thousands of years ago, this story helps us to think about what it means in each generation for women to be whole, spiritual beings: a creative part of God’s creative power.

Join in conversation as we move through Loss and Change, Aging, Independence, Insight, and more.

The retreat begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening, September 12, with a potluck supper and concludes by 3:00 pm Saturday, September 13.

We are returning to the St. Paul Monastery to embrace the calm peace and contemplative environment of the Sisters of St. Benedict. Those who participated last year know that we did not have enough time to fully appreciate our time at the Monastery.

The cost is $72 per person, which includes your private room, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. The Monastery is located on Larpenteur Avenue in Saint Paul, close for driving or carpooling. Space is limited. Please contact Mary Ofstie 952 933-1950 or Marion Stumo 952 938-8856 to indicate your interest in joining us.

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Steven Derfler about the “Dead Sea Scrolls” in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday betweeen services. Part one of two.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS- One of the most intriguing aspects of biblical study is the integration of history, geography, archaeology and religious study. Yet even more enigmatic is the period of time which sees the evolution of religious philosophy into what we now consider to be Judaism and Christianity.

We have heard a great deal in recent years about the Dead Sea Scrolls. What were they? How do they affect us as members of the great western religious traditions?

An international educational consultant, public speaker, archaeologist, historian, researcher, teacher and writer, Dr. Steven Derfler has been uncovering the histories of ancient civilizations for 35 years. Dr. Derfler brings insight to current political and social events, bridging the past with the future to promote greater understanding between people from different faiths and walks of life.

He currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He also lectures in the University of Minnesota Continuing Education and Compleat Scholar Program, The Dawn Schuman Institute of Jewish Learning in Chicago and the Sarasota County Adult and Community Education Program. He has also taught at Hamline University, where he served as Director of Jewish Studies.

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Derfler also served as the
Area Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee, the oldest human rights advocacy agency in the United States, and directs academic study tours to Israel and Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Greece and Turkey.

We are now offering communion instruction for all children who wish to begin receiving the sacrament. The instructional workshops are intended to be taken by
families together. Each begins with a community meal and then proceeds through a series of active learning exercises to teach the basic concepts of communion. You
need to participate in only one workshop; they are not a series. You can sign up for the workshops in the Sunday Friendship Folder or by calling the church office.

Families are not required to participate in the workshops and might feel it is best to have their children wait until the 5th grade when we will continue to offer the
Communion Retreat for all children, regardless of whether they have been taking communion already or not.

Start: 3:00 pm
End: 5:30 pm

There are many ways that Christians live out their faith at home, at church and in the world. One way is to join with other people of faith to influence the way our communities are shaped for the sake of all God’s children.

On Sunday, October 12 from 3 pm to 5:30 pm, thousands of people of faith, public officials, and others from across the state will come together to celebrate our life together in community and to express the faith values that call us to create healthy communities able to meet the challenges of our time.

This revival is sponsored by ISAIAH, a non-profit, ecumenical coalition of 90 congregations working in the greater Minneapolis, St. Paul and St. Cloud regions.

Our very own Gethsemane choir is going to be part of the 400-voice choir at this event! You are invited to be part of the group that attends this event together at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul to see what people of faith can contribute to the public conversation.

Together we will make transportation arrangements. Indicate your interest by contacting Pastor Laurie at 952-935-1753 or signing up in Friendship Folder on Sunday.
