The Luther Seminary Friends’ 2008 Women’s Winter Retreat is February 9.

Theme of the retreat, set for 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Sem, is “Living in God’s Love,” a study of the parable and art of the Prodigal Son.

Leading a Bible study of the familiar story of God’s willingness to welcome the sinner into his forgiving arms will be Mary Hinkle Shore, Associate Dean for First Theological Degree Programs at the Seminary. A Luther graduate, she served congregations in North Dakota for six years. She was called back to Luther in 1997 after completing her doctorate at Duke University.

Robert M. Brusic, a Luther pastor emeritus, will lead in a presentation around “the Artist as Story Teller.” That’s where the comfortable shoes come in. Dr. Brusic will lead a campus tour of displayed art work featuring the Prodigal Son.

Brusic says, “We study the story of Jesus and how Jesus used story to teach.”

Jerry Evenrud, a church musician and advocate for arts in the church, has given his entire world-class collection of Prodigal Son artwork to Luther. Dr. Brusic has described the works in his book, And Grace Will Lead Me Home: Images of the Prodigal Son from the Jerry Evenrud Collection.

There will be a special congregational meeting February 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM (in-between services) in the Sanctuary for the purpose of voting on the recommendation of the Call Committee to call John D. F. Nelson for the position of Senior Pastor at Gethsemane Lutheran Church.

Bio for Pastor John D.F. Nelson

Pastor John D. F. Nelson has been the associate pastor at Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Bloomington since 2002. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1990 and from Luther Seminary in 2002. He was ordained into the ministry in May of 2002.

Pastor Nelson worked at the Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1991 and was the Associate in Ministry at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Boulder from 1991 to 1999. In addition, he was an intern pastor at Salem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis from 2000 to 2001.

His father is a Lutheran minister which introduced him to a life of service at an early age.
He can read and translate ancient Greek and Hebrew and can converse in Norwegian.

Pastor Nelson has been married to Stephanie for 12 years and they have two children – Sarah, 9 and Tyler, 6.

His answer to “What are your hopes for the ELCA?” was:

“I hope and pray that the ELCA will remain a vibrant witness to the mission of making Christ known throughout the world, both locally and globally. I believe that if we are flexible and innovative in lifting up our unique Lutheran witness that we are justified by faith through God’s grace alone, and if we can remain relevant to the changing cultural environment in which we live, we will remain a growing church. Our witness is a bold confession that confronts the very heart of these times that are filled with messages of self-idealized righteousness.

As a church we do face many complex and divisive issues but my faith remains in God because this is his church and the message of Jesus Christ is bigger than any one issue. The core witness of the church is not how we run it, but it is in the one who claims us and unites us to be ‘the church,’ to be the bearer of Christ for the world.”

On Sunday, Feb 17 artist, Mark Carlson, will be here to talk about the new art show, WICKED GAME.

WICKED GAME is a show that deals with the issue of hate crimes and violence in our own Twin cities. This interactive show includes a “game-sheet” with descriptions of real hate crimes. The player’s job is to match the painting with the crime description.

Mark’s art is a vehicle for raising consciousness around social justice. Come to meet Mark and hear about the art called WICKED GAME on Sunday, Feb 17 at 10:10 in the Fireside Gallery.

Arts Alive! A Day at the Circus

Arts Alive is held on President’s Day each year for kids in first through sixth grade. This year we are excited to have artists from the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater lead the kids in “A Day at the Circus.” Children will be making shadow puppets, circus masks, developing their own side shows, experiencing clowning and designing a circus set. At 3:30 that day parents and friends are welcome to watch the kids as they put on their own “Circus.” We are limited to 50 children so register now to reserve your child’s spot!

  • When: February 18, from 8:30 am to 4 pm
  • How Much: The cost for the day is $25.00. Scholarships are available.
  • What’s provided: Breakfast, lunch, snacks and all supplies.

Discussions and play will be based off Splash!, a quarterly mailing that parents of children 0-36 months receive as part of our ministry to children.

Past auctions have seen an awesome variety of hand-made crafts, antiques, re-gifted new electronics, limited edition framed art, sporting event and concert tickets, theme baskets, donated personal services like tax preparation, computer tech help, carpentry, and babysitting, and even weekend use of wonderful vacation homes!

Many of the physical items we receive will be registered on the online auction site, “Ebay”, allowing the whole world to find them and bid on them beginning Sunday, Feb. 24th! A lot of other potential donations of services, or use of personal property, will only be available in-house, with traditional manual pen-and-paper recording of bids in competition with other Gethsemane folks during the week before the dinner event.
